Team hematite! Because sometimes it forms an ominous orb. Hematite is well known for its botryoidal (lumpy, grape-like) habit #minerals #MinCup25

Did you know that there are blueberries on Mars? And they're made of #Hematite? Very cool, but definitely don't eat them.

Vote Hematite for Mars! For its redness and for everyone's favourite Martian rover.

My tiny linocut portrait of the Marian rover Opportunity shows the robot in black against terrain in a gradient of rust to purple over printed in black, on cream coloured washi paper. By Ele Willoughby, 2022 My tiny linocut print shows a vertical rectangle with the rusty-red-orange of the planet with grey topology and glacial white near the poles. Its two moons appear in front of it. The word "MARS" and the symbol for Mars (a circle with upward right diagonal arrow) appear in white against the black background. by Ele Willoughby, 2022

Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin ✨ figured out what stars are made of ✨ when she was just 25. 🔭🧪

Her PhD thesis basically established the Harvard astro department — at a time when Harvard didn't officially allow woman students.

I wrote this little profile to mark the 100th anniversary of her thesis:

I've been asked a few times over the last few days what I think the chances are that the "leopard spots and poppy seeds" on Mars will turn out to be actual evidence of life. People are naturally skeptical given the history of possible signs of life on other planets. Strap in: long thread ahead...

As an Fe-oxide researcher, I’m excited to advocate for this 🧲 mineral. Here we go:

🟥 Banded Iron Formations
🫐 Mars dust + “blueberry” spherules
🧲 Magnetic (helpful for easy separation!)
🎨 Ancient pigments
& those awesome 80s/90s necklaces (you KNOW you had them!)

Trying to organize a similar course (but am terrible at "getting stuff done" so... that).

One idea is a "writing spot": used just for "work" (esp. when laptops multi-task as game consoles or TVs).

Also Gantt charts to plan (not waiting until the day projects are due to pick a topic...). YMMV :)

NEW: The White House wants to kill off Juno, NASA's mission to uncover Jupiter's secrets. Fortunately, its legacy is clear.

Juno's a scientist, but also an artist: it revealed Jupiter as a living van Gogh painting hanging in the sky.
