I’m on a bowling team with a bunch of under 40 folks. The video came on and they all knew it. I was surprised

This isn't Razormaid, but from the same era. Anne Clark's Our Darkness. So many genres and sub-genres of electronic dance music in 2025. Go back in time far enough, they all branch out from a few key places. Some of those places don't get enough recognition.

This version of Front 242's Rhythm of Time probably reached a larger audience.

This is another gem that got a ton of play in Chicago and then as far as I can tell, fell into obscurity. If it sounds dated to you, that's fine. But what genre is it? I don't know. That's the beauty of it. Lost of us danced to it every Saturday night.

Talk about a true underground movement. They had an outsized influence on so much contemporary dance music and still remain largely unknown, even to many of us who were there on the dancefloor at the time.

It's fascinating to finally learn about the history of Razormaid now. It's a body of work that bridges the gaps between old and new dance music communities, the gay community in SF ravaged by the AIDS epidemic and what would become house/techno/industrial/rave (for lack of better terms).

The Razormaid! edit of Hassan by Fatima is the holy grail for me. I can't find it on vinyl anywhere. I am not sure I'd even buy it, but this was a "Medusa's tune" that haunted my memories for decades. It's gorgeous.

Kraftwerk, Tones on Tail, Pailhead, Divine, etc., even early Faith No More. But there was a cluster of dance music tunes or remixes of more well known songs that didn't really blossom into anything that reached a larger audience. And those are the tunes that I have been chasing for years.

Much of the music you'd hear at Medusa's went on to become well known, if it wasn't already: the Industrial acts, the New Wave acts, the Chicago house artists, The Punk/Hardcore acts, etc. But there was also this stuff that didn't quite fit into those genres.

Medusa's was a magical place, an all ages dance club, and a spawning ground for so much musical creativity. You could hear house, techno, industrial, new wave, punk, etc etc, all in the same set - a microcosm of the various styles of underground music in Chicago at the time.
