If we assume an average inflation rate in the US at 6% (which is probably higher than the actual average), 235 in 2025 dollars is around 333

Yeah I couldn't read the entire article because of the paywall, but the Anthropic exec's insistence on AI's emotions and sentience is a huge red flag. Who cares what a mod does on some discord server, this exec from a major AI company is having delusions of grandeur and it's just brushed off

I'm not sure what discourse you're talking about I feel this. I've found myself engaging less and less here bc it's starting to feel like grand standing and talking AT each other instead of WITH each other. My feed is getting a little doom scrolly, I need to refresh

These work great, but the smell is strong indoors

If only he had $5 with him!

To be clear, I'm not trying to sound like it's the borrower's fault. These are absurd rates, tuition fees, and the fact that you can never have it forgiven through usual bankruptcy means it's very broken. There is no incentive for institutions to control costs, you take on 100% of the risk

Some rough math, at 8%, 190000 would equal 15200 a year in interest, roughly 1260 a month. So if you pay less than that, your balance keeps growing. A home mortgage they don't let you do that, which is why you have a finite number of years. But school debt it's allowed to balloon for some reason

Glen Powell is "we have Chris Evans at home"

Would say that you lived two lives, tried to play both sides but you couldn't find your own place?

"How'd you do it Frank? How'd you get all those presents to the kids in one night?"

Oh wow, I thought this was like a middle school student. A junior in college is a full grown adult, what is happening

For bash commands, never. I'm too nervous that I may not understand what "always approve" encompasses. Tho coding agents I find more of a "point me in the right direction" vs automating writing code. I'll usually only let it write for me for small prototypes

Econ dev means tomorrow's sunny weather isn't special, but now know to get up at midnight to see aurora borealis. The magic evolves and exists. I think the problem lies in econ dev = exponential growth, keeping us too tired to notice
November 30, 2025 at 7:23 PM
I don't think it's mutually exclusive or even that binary. Econ dev can mean sustainably meeting needs so that "of we get to eat today" isn't a rarity. Increasing our need on others decreases our survival needs. Buying mtg cards doesn't feel special, but bonding with new friends over a hobby does

I think people default to screen time because they are too tired to do anything else
November 30, 2025 at 6:33 PM
Yeah it's a really tough thing - like how do present the wide breadth of things you can do to a kid who hasn't had the experience to be able to choose? Choosing a uni, a major, felt so final and even then it was presented as a time to explore. Throw in trades too and it's so overwhelming
November 30, 2025 at 12:35 AM
I'm not saying it's a scam, but I do think by treating university as a one size fits all solution is problematic. Some people absolutely thrive, and some people make it 4 years (if even) and still have no idea what they got out of it. We tell kids they can be anything, but that's hard to narrow down
November 30, 2025 at 12:31 AM
For sure, right now we stigmatize trades as the route for those who "aren't smart enough for college"
November 29, 2025 at 6:15 PM
I'm not anti-education and I think there is a lot of value in a society that can critically think. But I think we've been questioning the value of a basically mandatory 4 year degree for decades now especially with the debt that is required to attend. I can see why students would take the easy path
