“The gods cannot carve their own shrines.” Amyntas didn’t jolt as Hermes spoke. “I’ve heard.” His mother told him, in her many teachings, that every shrine was carved by mortal hands. Shrines bridged the gap between realms. By making an offering, one built a connection with a god that no other could break. “Usually, the shrine is kept at the temple.” He looked up at Hermes, who lounged in a cradle of branches. Despite his posture, nothing seemed relaxed about him. “No one makes offerings anymore. No one travels, Mystipoli is small and close knit. Mortals do not need the guidance of gods to make it from one end to the next.” Bitterness seeped into every word. “You’re the god of more than travel.” Amyntas offered softly. Hermes scoffed, “Liars and thieves? They are born with silver tongues and quick fingers; they rarely see reason to pray.” “I did.” That drew a pause and the curve of a smile to the god’s half-hidden face. “You did.” Soft as a purr.

Amyntas seeing the interior of Hermes' abode~ #WIPSnips
It was not the palace of Zeus, built in the clouds. Nor was it the shining towers of Poseidon’s domain inlaid with pearls and shells. He didn’t opt for Athena’s brilliant marble, or even Apollo’s sprawling open air manor. His house had stone pillars on either side of the entryway where the atrium greeted them. An ornate fountain at the center with an ancient tree growing around it, there were two archways leading into areas for the first floor. Hermes walked past the fountain and over the roots knotted across the floor, towards a third archway that revealed stairs going up. His home was simple. He did not need the lavish amenities of his family, but it was no less beautiful. Each wall was inlaid with tiles depicting imagery Amyntas longed to study.

The house of Hermes sat silent in a beautiful field dotted with sheep and fluffy cows. The beasts were special gifts from Apollo to his favorite brother. One hundred years had passed since Hermes hid himself here, almost to the day. Only a few still bothered to visit. Apollo stepped out of the tree line, removing his hood. The god of sunlight and music paused to offer the herd some affection as they rushed to greet him, scratching their chins as he took in the darkened halls of his half-brother’s pantheon. A silver platter sat on the steps, bearing Dionysus’s symbol. It held the stems of grapes and a spilled glass of wine. Such a pitiful offering to the once popular messenger that played recluse within the marble walls.
