9 billion meat chickens are killed annually in the US. 168,000 farms. How much regulatory oversight do you think there is? How tenderly do you think they are handled and slaughtered for those tight margins? The scale of likely negligence and abuse is beyond imagining.

Judging from the conditions and sheer volume of animals, it's likely an industrial farm in the US or a country like it, and the footage is from an animal activist who has trespassed, or it's a concerned employee blowing the whistle.

And I suspect Somalis take better care of their animals, because they would value them more. Theirs is not a land of plenty. Industrial scale farming values profit over everything, not the welfare of individual animals. I may be wrong.

They're farming at an industrial scale, which means they'll have industrial-level insurance. These birds are likely about 5 weeks old, grown through genetic manipulation into 'frankenbirds' to be ready for slaughter at 4 to 6 weeks. It won't take them long to restock.

Yes, colonialism, but also a reminder for authors to be extremely careful. Don't assume that because you have a legitimate publisher that their legal team will scrutinise and anticipate all potential issues. As this story shows, if something goes wrong, the author is the one who ends up blamed.
