1/4: I’ve seen this Pine Tree State Poll for Maine’s Second Congressional District cited as evidence that Jared Golden is struggling politically.

But I think he looks pretty good, considering that Kamala lost the district by 9.5%.

Here’s the key takeaway:

1/2: I have no idea what Lina Khan thinks about Israel, or whether she’s concerned about the rise of anti-semitism in America.

But her smiling photo with Steve Bannon, taken just a couple of months after he delivered a Nazi salute at a CPAC conference, does not inspire confidence.

It’s hard to look away from this Marsden Hartley painting at the Philips Collection in DC.

The more that you pay attention to it, the more it draws you in.

Excellent thread.

Personally, I wish Mandel had been right in 2017/18.

She was dead wrong, of course, and it’s important to note that point; however, I still deeply regret the fact that the Prayer of St. Francis resonates far less with me now than it used to.

I don’t agree with everything in here, but the high points are very high.

I particularly liked this section.

I’m not from NYC, although I am a moderately frequent visitor, so I didn’t have local context for a bunch of the questions.

Still, I agreed the most with Cuomo, which makes sense to me.

I support M because he has better personal values than C, but I hope he listens a lot to the center as mayor.

1/4: Visited the Philips Collection in DC today, and it was lovely, as usual; I covered about a 1/3 of the museum, and here are some standouts.

Enjoyed a beer in the courtyard as well.

I immediately thought about the infamous Calvin and Hobbes cartoon where Calvin bombs his elementary school.

I hope C+H is too highbrow for maga, and that the junk AI video wasn’t inspired by the human produced cartoon, but if I’m wrong about that then the underlying message here is dangerous.

5/5: Thanks for reading.

And to end on a positive note, here’s a lovely painting by Norman Rockwell.

2/3: Beyond its independent merits, his shift to a more diverse and inclusive cultural perspective later in life increased my appreciation of his earlier, more traditional work.

And thinking about this dynamic made me realize that it applies more broadly.

1/3: The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA is a lovely small museum located on beautiful grounds with nice outdoor sculptures.

And Rockwell himself is an enduring artist because of his late career shift towards more social justice themed works (wall captions in next post).

I loved military history as a kid, but nowadays I’m more into art museums than war themed culture.

Still, visiting the Springfield Armory was fun, and seeing the Springfield Rifled Musket which helped to win the Civil War was pretty cool.

1/2: Sometimes contemporary art really delivers.

There were a bunch of lovely sculptures at The Mount (Edith Wharton’s home) in Lennox, MA, but this one was my favorite.
