ghosts of language

in the certainty of your death
i couldn’t cure
the restlessness in my bones—
a hollow ache
to move.

so i folded thousands
of paper birds,
floated them from my flatmate’s window—
boats and lanterns,
ghosts of language
i couldn’t speak.

the tongue still seeks
what burns,
the quiet ash
that follows,
the slow knowing
i am burning too.

$thermodynamics of memory there’s that thing that resists naming— the clash between then and now, you and me, a cake rising in its heat. i still don’t know how to find you, that narrow beam of first light, evidence of presence or fracture, your stupid beautiful face beaming at me from a photo, or some other thing ineffable i once set on fire.$

you might zest a lemon
to make a pie.
preheat the oven.
assemble the ingredients.
hope it makes someone happy.

sometimes,
to make a pie, you need
a hunger that burns
bright with bitterness.

the crust is the hardest part.
you find the recipe—
your grandmother’s, the internet’s—
it always ends the same:

what holds us,
what keeps the insides
from spilling over,
crumbles. caves in.

scraped raw for flavor,
to the bone,
for happiness that keeps.
