Bujalski's working with a budget and a name cast for the first time so I guess this is elevated mumblecore or something. It's smart, insightful, quietly funny and I've a lot of time for Kevin Corrigan.

Sweet and gentle, possibly a little too gentle. Tampopo it's not...

This was an unsettling read. István's passive, resigned drift felt familiar at times, the numbness and alienation too. The sparseness of the language is a perfect fit. As István rises + falls without seeming to really act, we get existentialism, sexuality, trauma...

Even by Kaurismäki's standards, this is a bleak, moribund affair but I'm here for that. The portrayal of London is so squalid and decrepit I'm almost offended on its behalf.
TW: contains gratuitous Strummer.

This was a hard but rewarding watch. Araki makes an almost dreamlike, deeply serious movie about child abuse but doesn't entirely abandon his usual queer trash aesthetic. It's powerful stuff.

Zwigoff and Clowes' second collaboration but this is no Ghost World. It's gleefully snarky although the misanthropy veers a little close to misogyny and the targets are a bit obvious and a bit of a Clowes revenge fantasy. Has its moments.

Impressive, expensive, a bit soulless. Edward Furlong is annoying; learning, smiling Arnie likewise. The extended version is a bit baggy.

I've always assumed I'd seen this but now I'm not so sure - it's so referenced / sampled etc, maybe it just feels like I have. Anyways I sat down to watch some austere seventies Russian movie but realised I needed dumb and ended up here.

I was pretty disappointed with this in the end. All the reasons people cite for it being a lost classic centre on its prescience and its family-level take on the rise of the Nazis.

Well this was lovely. As Cave slips into his comfortable reactionary dotage, Ellis still seems like a real mensch. Part history, part meandering tour movie, part animal park documentary, this is charming and moving and funny.
