I mean just think about it. The EU is stronger together, right? So why would they unilaterally surrender that advantage & give the UK an advantage in negotiations via 1-on-1 deals? That’s… that’s the *whole point* of being in a union.

Yeah, whilst I don't know what a 'reasonable' contribution would be, if we assume that 6+billion is 10x a reasonable price, 70million is just so low that it's unserious, verging on insulting.

So what? Ukraine is under no obligation to sign a deal simply because he 'doubles down'. My kids can write a document that says that they have the right to ice-cream after dinner & 'double down' on their demands, but it doesn't mean its going to happen.

I might be wrong as this is a leak rather than what Reeves announces, but if true, it affirms my suspicion that this government is best described as "milquetoast".

I disagree, there is an idea - but unfortunately it is "don't treat the electorate like grownups & address the economic hangover from COVID & Brexit" rather than anything positive. So instead of fixing things (because that's icky & complicated) they've opted to do patches.

He's trying to big up the talks in the hope of overcoming Russian resistance (which wont work unless the deal is a Ukrainian capitulation) so that he can get the Nobel Peace Prize.

Its obvious that any deal which doesn't include either "Ukraine (de facto) surrenders" or "Russia gets a veto on NATO membership" will be rejected by Russia. Also, the odds of a ceasefire this year are minimal - my guesstimate is summer next year, to give Trump a political win before the mid-terms.
