Go for it! One thing that might help is using an iron-on patch on the inside first, to keep the fabric in place and more stable while you’re stitching. I did this for a security guard friend’s uniform pants a few times, since he’d wear out the inseams doing his rounds.

It's a 3-ply actually. I have the feeling the skewing is partly due to tension issues... I know my tension is all over the place while I'm figuring out how to knit in a way that won't ruin my hands.

Probably a cowl. Mostly it's just practice since my tension is currently all over the place. It's been over 10 years since I knit with needles and I'm learning Continental to reduce hand/wrist fatigue.

See if you have a spinning guild in your local area, you might be able to get a de-stashed drop spindle. Maybe even some in-person lessons.
