Like my “math intuition” tells me that YAML was designed bottom-up (constructively combining syntax rules) when it was trying to solve a problem that’s much more elegant top-down (express any configuration)

From a computability pov (not that i know much abt computability :p), YAML is like if a language really wanted to be Jsonnet/nix/cue/nickel/etc but wasn’t allowed to be turing complete

Sure, but NixOS modules are easy to configure (relatively speaking) and config options are (relatively) well-tested. You don’t get any of that with a custom image :(
