Clear you house, clear your mind
Hello. Thank you very much for checking in. I lost my mojo but spring has sprung and the brighter days are revealing the dust everywhere. Time to stop moping and get cleaning again.

That's the list, it's the best I can do for now. I can't see a way of making it simpler. It has cured me of any desire to ever buy clothes again, not only because the above experience has been exhausting, but also because I now have a wardrobe full of clothes I want to and can wear.

12D. ... and I find it motivating to know that little capsule wardrobes of clothes I love are waiting for me as I get back in shape.
April 27, 2025 at 7:56 AM
12C.
- lose 3kg
- lose 5 kg
- lose 10kg
You may consider these categories controversial. I've put on 10 kg in the past 2 years, and I have grown tired of seeing things in my wardrobe that I can no longer wear. I've put these categories in boxes ...

12A.
- socks (previously I had work socks and work out socks separate, decided they could go together)
- underpants, stockings, shapewear
- bras, singlets, thermal tops
- handbags, back packs
- other accessories (you can split this up further into necklaces/bracelets/earrings, etc if you have a lot)

12. Here is the full list of categories I used in my wardrobe:
- donate
- don't know / meh
- events (weddings, the races, etc)
- office
- working from home
- casual outings
- exercise, further split into t-shirts, bras, leggings, jumpers
- housework / at home / comfort
...

11. If you have used activity based categories, you can create "go-to" outfits with all the items needed for the outfit stored together. You can also take photos of your outfits as you wear them, or add your clothes to a wardrobe app. (Creating outfits may need to be a different list).

10. If you want, you can record the size of the horded boxes you used and at a later date replace them with matching acrylic boxes / wicker baskets / whatever takes your fancy. You can also replace your hand written labels with printed one you create on your laptop.
April 27, 2025 at 7:56 AM
9. Once you have everything in, you can create labels either by just writing on shelves and draws with whiteboard marker or by using sticky labels. This will help you remember where everything is and help you keep your wardrobe organised.

8C. This is the stage where I was defeated. With about 3/4 of my clothes back in, I lost heart and just put the rest back in the remaining space blending three categories together so the clothes would fit.
April 27, 2025 at 7:56 AM
8B. Use your horded boxes to section draws and shelves.
April 27, 2025 at 7:56 AM
8A. I used the signs I have created to section the wardrobe. For hanging clothes, I punched a hole in the paper and hung the sign on the first item in the category. For shelves, I folded the paper so it would sit up.

8. Start putting everything away. You will find this becomes an iterative process and you will start re-categorising items. You many again start to feel overwhelmed. Have a cup of tea.
April 27, 2025 at 7:56 AM
7C. Avoid the temptation to hang everything else. Stretchy items will distort over time if on hangers. EG tops can develop bubbles on the shoulder from stretching over the end of the hanger. Dress straps can become so long the dress becomes indecent.
April 27, 2025 at 7:56 AM
7B. Put underwear in draws, as it is less likely you need to see these items when putting an outfit together.
April 27, 2025 at 7:56 AM
7A. Put items you rarely wear, in hard-to-reach spots, possibly even a spare bedroom if you are lucky enough to have one. Similarly, put out of season clothes in boxes and pack away on top of the wardrobe / top of the linen cupboard / under the stairs.
April 27, 2025 at 7:56 AM
7. Once you have all your items out of your wardrobe and categorised, decide where the categories should go in your wardrobe. Consider using post-it notes, if you want to map it all out in advance and minimise moving categories about.
April 27, 2025 at 7:56 AM
6. It's OK to leave items in your wardrobe, if you are happy that they are in a category and you want the category to go in that spot.
April 27, 2025 at 7:56 AM
5. If you are feeling overwhelmed, you probably need another category. This is also why you need the signs, there will be too many categories to hold in your head.
April 27, 2025 at 7:56 AM
4. Take items out of your wardrobe one-by-one and put them in the appropriate category. This is when you will realise you need a "donate" category, a "no, this really just needs to go in the bin" category, and a "I don't know" category.
April 27, 2025 at 7:56 AM
3. Decide on some categories and make signs using the A4/letter paper and the marker. One category per sheet. They need to be large so you don't lose them under your clothes. Keep these items handy as you will discover more categories as you go. I'll list all my categories at the end.
April 27, 2025 at 7:56 AM
2. Gather supplies: A4/letter paper, a whiteboard marker, a hole punch (trust me), all those boxes you have been hoarding because "it's such a good box"
