Designing Virtual Worlds by Richard Bartle. A real classic tome, and an mmo book written before WoW was released. It preserves the unique and varied perspectives from the before times. Makes me want to try to make a multi-player game then an mmo more and more.

Like the above comment, a battle map is useful if you don't have an IRL one.

The past 2 years have been amazing for video games. But there have been some high profile flops this past 2 years. Consumers are (hopefully) buying the good ones more than the bad.
