I’ve been a teacher for nearly 20 years. I can tell you the difference between an education system run and funded by Labour to the Tories is stark. The state education sector is about to benefit hugely and that should benefit everyone, not just the select few.

The last Tory didn’t invest in education you are correct.New Labour rebuilt hundreds of schools however and invested billions.Just as this Labour gov want to do.They want to raise the standard for everyone not just a select few. Why would people want to in your words ‘impoverish’ themselves instead?

Selective education is a luxury. The private school is providing a service - there is no other non-state service that is able to avoid charging VAT. Why should private schools? I agree schools should be better but every time tax rises are put on the table to help reduce class sizes, people oppose it

And the money to reduce those class sizes has to come from somewhere. Honestly, taxing a luxury to pay for this rather than increasing VAT across the board, increasing income tax etc seems much fairer.
