OK, for the American right, their idea of racial identity is probably driving the idea of civilisation. But as I don't believe "race" exists (outside of our imaginings), I think that's doubly bogus.

I agree largely, but isn't the point then that there is competition for leadership within these constructed identities?
Identity is of central importance to most of us. Hence the virulence of the arguments, because people want their vision to predominate within their self-identified group.
