I went to a small Baptist church growing up, maybe 50 members. The pastor was paid something like $100-200 per week and ran the city water utility as his day job. There's a treatment plant named after him now. I'm not sure where the money to pay him a living wage just to preach would have come from.

I feel like there's a block in understanding people have where they don't get that "red states are oppressing LGBT+/minority communities" means that those communities exist there under oppression, in large numbers even! People need spaces for them in these states especially.
