My seasonal sense is that this year, we are seeing more small owls on the move out of the boreal forest this month. They are likely being driven south by a scarcity of food - something I am not surprised at after walking 50 kms in the boreal and not seeing a single small rodent.

I mean, sure, during breeding when the female is in the hollow, the male will often be nearby displaying prey. But outside being in the hollow, female Powerful Owls will display. Maybe people see a big chunky tough looking POwl, like this female, and assume it must be a male. IDK.
