I would like to know more details. Did they get rid of all LM Montgomery books? She is the most important Canadian writer in history, and her books touch people around the world.

Finally, while I respect your thoughtful thread, I want to tell you that I am glad you don't get to decide what I "get" to be critical of. And it seems to me that may reflect the same censorious attitude that I find offensive in this story.

I was a library kid, and loved that you would find odd things, books that opened worlds to the mysterious past, which helps give young people a sense that things were not always as they are.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply, to a point. I find it hard to imagine why it was necessary to get rid of Steinbeck and Lucy Maud Montgomery books for example. I agree that I am not an expert, and it may be more complicated than it seems on the surface.

I suspect some misguided, self-important officials think they are doing something good with this intellectual vandalism. If we care at all about our history — which I am not sure we do — then this should be stopped immediately. 5/5

From the story: "Copies of works of fiction such as the Harry Potter novels, Lord of the Flies and Wuthering Heights were also removed, according to the document, as were books by luminaries such as John Steinbeck, Lucy Maud Montgomery and Kurt Vonnegut." 4/x

But that doesn't mean we should get rid of books about Canadian military history. If anybody is ashamed of our military history or feels it is not sufficiently inclusive, they are badly educated or misguided and should not be in a position to run a library. 3/5

I am hostile to the idea that we shouldn't "rewrite history." Each generation needs to do that, because we are different, and history is a story we tell ourselves about ourselves, fundamentally political. 2/5

The good news is that it is not likely going to work. These countries are not as they were, and the American military is good as some things — shock and awe — but bad at counterinsurgency. 11/x

It's great that Maduro is gone, but there is no guarantee that Venezuelans will be better off. And the sabre-rattling is bad news for other countries in the hemisphere, including Canada. 10/x

Latin American countries have been choosing their own destinies, some right wing, some left wing, which seems good to me, democratic. The region is more prosperous, connected, with higher education levels and state capacity. 8/x
