An ex-Brooklyn boy making good making books.
I’m moving along well, getting comfortable with Affinity 3. My workflow can be adapted nicely and; the book design and layout work I do can make especially attractive books that are easy on readers’ eyes. I’m running a bit of a pre-Spring sale on my services if anyone has a book ready for prepress.

… “Sutainable” is a b.s. term if you refuse to sign the players to get to a place worth sustaining. Stearns apparently has yet to learn that—despite him starting out in NY originally—a winner in NY will make $3 for every$1 or $2 spent on winning ballplayers.

… It was Cohen who got Soto’s deal done for the Mets last year, not Stearns, who just seems to refuse to grow with his new circumstances and reality. He doesn’t “believe” in 4- or 5- year deals—for pitchers, especially. We’re going to be stuck with Maneas and Montases as long as Stearns is here. …

It’s time to fire David Stearns. I didn’t like the hire to start with, but thought, Okay, give him a chance. Well, he’s proven he’s just not up to the job with a major market team. He’s still stuck in a small cap mentality, where he won’t utilize the available financial advantage he’s got. …

… Thoughts? Anyone else contemplating or even in the actual process of moving their for-profit working book design or graphic design studio over to Affinity from Adobe? If so, how’s the move going? How are you liking Affinity and just the process of getting used to new software?

… It’s been a while, years, since I last made a major software move and, again, I’m having fun with the learning process, doing various tutorials and exercises. I’ve even done a set of mock sample pages for an imaginary book project. It all looks very promising. …

… One thing I have to iron out is whether or not to continue with a small Adobe subscription, just for typefaces, or to go whole hog with Google fonts and other open-source/free alternatives. This is all very interesting to me and I’m having fun checking out the possibilities. …

… I’m really working to get up to speed with Publish and Photo. I plan to start using it this year and, I think, maybe making the move away from Adobe. Did I mention that Affinity is now free, costing nada, zilch, nothing? That’s huge and could spell real trouble for Adobe. …

… They lacked a few key things I relied on—robust PDF support, for instance. Well, that’s changed. I’m familiarizing myself now with Affinity’s all-in-one that combines Publish, Photo, and Design into one piece of software. So far I’m loving how they’ve refined all of it. …

… open-source (free) alternatives to Adobe’s offerings, tho’ I never actually used them on a live, paying project. When the Affinity‘s programs came out a few years ago I played with tryouts of them and, while they had some promise, weren’t quite ready for my use in a production environment. …

… I moved over to InDesign and gradually left behind Quark. This made me an all-Adobe studio, which I was less than thrilled with, once they discontinued one-time buying of the software for a subscription model and neverending payments. So I got comfortable with Scribus and GIMP …

For the first time in 25 years I’m playing with a major change in the software I use in my book design work. I started with PageMaker in 1987, before I even landed on book design as my graphic design niche. In 1992 I switched to Quark for its more precise type handling. In 2002 …

Anyone else's interest piqued at the notion of Bill and Ted doing Beckett's Waiting for Godot on Broadway?

A $200 million ballroom construction project is an irresponsible and tone-deaf use of funds when many Americans are struggling with housing affordability. The administration should prioritize investments that directly improve the lives of everyday citizens.
