“This is a vital review that makes the case for change by focusing on the evidence on what will reduce reoffending and prevent more people becoming victims of crime.

Our response to David Gauke's sentencing review: howardleague.org/news/a-vital...
On the left, in white text on a black background, it reads: “The ball is now in the government’s court. Solving the prison capacity crisis will require major intervention and, as the review recognises, this will only succeed if reform and investment deliver an effective and responsive probation service." The quote is from Andrea Coomber KC (Hon.). On the right is a photograph of a prison cell. There is a green bed, and the walls are mouldy.

Any Sentencing Review must surely be just a first step in the long promised fundamental appraisal of our entire neglected desperately underfunded Justice system.

A couple of quick thoughts on the Sentencing Review, due out today

Successive governments and parliaments have been persistent offenders: driving up sentence lengths, pitching the prison system into recurring crises, then casting around for fixes for the mess they have created

We are among the many charities that have co-signed this letter to the Lord Chancellor.

Blocking the Sentencing Council's guidelines on pre-sentence reports means putting more pregnant women, new mothers and babies in prison, and at risk of significant harm.

💡How can we ensure that research is shaped by the voices of those it’s meant to serve?

As part of our ongoing Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) initiatives, we’re pleased to announce an upcoming online workshop dedicated to exploring exactly that.

Further details below. ⬇️

Every Easter I think of women in prison, locked in for long periods of time over 4 days. For pregnant women & new mothers, the isolation is brutal. Our Lost Mothers research makes it clear: we must stop sending pregnant women to prison. @birthcompanions.bsky.social @cleanbrk.bsky.social

In an effort to build/rebuild online networks I've set up 3 starter kits in my main areas of research interest:
Links in the posts which follow - reply to be added.
And if you're in the intersecting areas, especially the middle bit, and we don't know each other already - do say hello 😊
Venn diagram with three intersecting circles: children and young people's health, inclusive public involvement and co-production and children's rights and youth participation
