This White-tailed Doe at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma gave me quite a look, tongue out and all!

This female Summer Tanager stopped by my Arkansas yard for a short visit. She perched just long enough for me to get this clean shot before flying off to hunt insects in the trees. Always a treat seeing these colorful birds this time of year.

Caught this female Summer Tanager with a wasp in her bill, one of the few bird species that regularly hunts and eats stinging insects.

This White-tailed Doe at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge looked like she was sneaking up on my dog, Rosie. The deer were fascinated with her this trip, they kept edging closer, watching her every move. Maybe they could tell she’s almost 19 years old and wanted to check out the “wise old dog”.

Extreme close-up of a White-tailed Doe's eye, shot from my truck with an 800mm lens. Shooting from the vehicle kept her calm and let me get close enough for this shot.

An old White-tailed Doe at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. Her cloudy eye really stood out to me, and after some research, I think it might be nuclear sclerosis, which is common in older deer.
What do you think? Does it look more like nuclear sclerosis or a cataract?

This Great Blue Heron landed a fish while I was watching at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. I never get tired of seeing how precise these birds are when they hunt.

This Great Blue Heron caught a fish while I was watching at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. It’s amazing how fast they strike after standing motionless for so long.

I’m still seeing Ruby-throated Hummingbirds at my feeders here in Arkansas, which amazes me this late in the season.
Are any of you still getting hummingbird visitors at your feeders, or have most of them moved on through your area?

This Great Blue Heron at Lost Lake was patient, focused, and successful. I watched it spear a small fish in the shallows and couldn’t resist getting low to capture the moment.

Spotted this White-tailed Buck standing alert in the oak brush at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. He blended in so well with the cover that I almost missed him.

A White-tailed Buck standing tall in the prairie at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. I always enjoy seeing how well they blend into the grasses and wildflowers here.

This River Otter at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma wasn’t shy about showing off its catch. Caught in the act with a fresh fish in its teeth!

I went to the Wichita Mountains hoping for bull elk photos. No luck this time, but I did get close looks at a couple of cow elk. Always worth the trip.

Had an incredible encounter with River Otters at Post Oak Creek in the Wichita Mountains last week. One swam directly under the bridge I was standing on, surfaced, and locked eyes with me for several seconds.
