Getting fed up with all these “The problem with X and how to solve it, which only I thought of” books. I’d welcome “The problem with X and why we can’t solve it” or “ Why X is a predicament and not a problem” books instead.

The debate over assisted dying revealed a division on both left and right, between those who believe in individual sovereignty all the way down and others who see human life as socially embedded. Tim Stanley says between liberals and conservatives on one side, socialists and progressives on t’other.

This vote on the assisted dying bill is going to be very revealing because it will highlight a divide in our politics that cuts across other ones but is going to be increasingly important. It’s the one between a politics of individual choice and mastery and one of limits and duty.
