Probably going to fuck up everyone's commute.

But it's been a week since the last rain! You can't expect people to remember how to handle it over such a long time.

I'm so looking forward to everyone trying to get to Ikea tomorrow.

Yeah. But I think they're hoping for grass that prevents methane production, or magical free carbon capture devices, or something.
I suspect EV, solar, etc adoption will still be too slow without govt incentives. Hopefully the next govt will reinstate what we've lost and more.

And what happens to food production when the climate changes, Nicola? What happens to food prices when a season's production gets wiped out by the third once-in-a-century storm of the year?
December 3, 2025 at 2:31 AM
I've heard this before from right-leaning friends: "I'm concerned about climate change but new technology will take care of it". Another excuse to do nothing. Problem is, even if the private sector did it, it won't be fast enough. It would require massive govt investment they're not willing to make.

Attempting to claim credit for the houses built under the program that Labour set up and then National cancelled is bizarre. Did she think they'd forgotten?
I get the impression she's one of those sad people who always think they're the smartest person in the room when they're not by a long shot.

My point here is it's a mistake to say the conduct of this government in relation to trans NZers is solely a NZ First thing. Yes, the majority of the National Party voted to ban conversion practices. But those who thought it should remain legal did not find that position a barrier to advancement.

Very good point.

Peters will work with Labour if he can get more of what he wants from them, regardless of Hipkins being in or out. But I think he'll get a better deal from National, at least while Luxon is around. While Luxon wants to remain PM he'll give Peters whatever it takes to make that happen.

If Labour want their voters to stay home next election, this is certainly a way to achieve that goal.
December 1, 2025 at 12:56 AM
... there is good evidence it will help them get elected and there is certainly good evidence it could hurt them once in government. So why do it?
December 1, 2025 at 12:43 AM
I think both countries were more "we must get rid of/block these right-wing extremists" than "Labour is so moderate, we must vote for them". And certainly in the UK their popularity has plummeted because people didn't actually want Tory-lite. But perhaps I should have said that I don't think ...

Evidence from around the world suggests it doesn't work. But that's not going to stop Labour from trying it again.

It's a bit buried in the middle of this unnecessarily long story, but it's there:
“If you can, travel outside of those peak times and also catch public transport, there's a great train station at Sylvia Park, and then it's a very short five-minute walk across to Ikea,” Howard said.

Aside from the clearly bs quote they attributed to Labour, the implication that kids are not being taught times tables is going to be recognised as a lie by anyone with kids in the school system. What does she think this propaganda will actually achieve?

Trump's position is exactly the same, is it not?
November 28, 2025 at 12:23 AM
Au contraire, it absolutely needs to continue. And if he could take out the entire coalition when he gets rolled, even better.
November 28, 2025 at 12:21 AM
My theory is that part of it is right-wing bias in the politics depts of mainstream media outlets, and part of it is that National are just not held to the same standard. They're expected to the morally bankrupt and politically mercenary so it's not a big enough story when they are exactly that.

Eating one thing exclusively is the defining characteristic of vampires. Sure, that one thing being mayonnaise is extremely weird, but I think this is evidence for him being a vampire, not against.

Ridiculous. And let's be honest, they'll need ACT and keeping it will be a non-negotiable for ACT, so it's not going to happen and they know it's not going to happen. She's just setting up another campaign promise they justify breaking with "the coalition made us do it".
November 26, 2025 at 12:45 AM
Can't trust what he's said either way. I doubt he'd blow up the coalition over this, but I bet he'll get a few more policy concessions out of NACT if the bill gets drawn.

That logic is equally valid everywhere in the world, and that's why I'm pretty pessimistic about the future. All the meetings and agreements and commitments over decades and humanity put more carbon into the atmosphere in 2024 than any year before.

I'd also note that in terms of change in emission per capita since 1990, we're lagging many of the countries we like to compare ourselves to. We're down 20%, but the US is down ~30%, the EU is down ~40%, and the UK is down nearly 60%. If we can't lead we should at least keep up.
