the amount of backstory they came up with in order for the improvisation to feel real, just the encyclopedic knowledge of pop music—a lot of people were genuinely confused as to whether the band was real and that is a testament to that work

I soaked up the references, how it was made and why they made it that way, how an improvised line delivered in just the right way could be more indelible than any bit of intensely labored-over writing
