The Southern magnolia (M. grandiflora) is indigenous to the southeastern United States, from North Carolina to east Texas.

It is also planted as an ornamental elsewhere where climate permits, such as the specimen below at the botanical garden in Nantes, France.

A small portion of the Goldfields-Esperance (Nullarbor Plain) region of Western Australia operates in its own unofficial time zone, UTC+8:45 (Eucla time).

In southern winter, it is 45m ahead of Perth (WA) and 45m behind Adelaide (SA). In summer (current), 45m and 1h45m.

The long-term non-viability of a Queer / Islamist alliance is obvious to everyone other than the Queer faction (though probably not the Islamists).

Until just now, if you had asked me what Biafra was, I might have described something suspiciously like Biarritz 🤔

TIL.

I don't like Bari Weiss, and I don't like Tucker Carlson or Nick Fuentes or Hasan Piker, and as far as the right goes, I don't care which of these two factions "wins", but I hope each does a large amount of damage to the other on the way down.

JD Vance tried to sell out our allies to an enemy in a dirty deal in the dark of night, behind the backs of his colleagues, Congress, and the American people, but he failed. Stop whining.

Just finished the Polish limited series "Heweliusz" on Netflix. Historical drama about the sinking of the passenger ferry MS Jan Heweliusz in the Baltic Sea on 14 January 1993.

Ensemble cast, fabulous re-creation of the Poland of that time period.

Highly recommended.

Grant of permission from the City of Leiden (Jan van Hout, secretary) dated 12 February 1609, authorizing approx. 100 English Separatists to settle there.

Eventually about 300 Separatists would settle in Leiden.

In 1620, a group of them would continue on to Massachusetts Bay...

Much of West Virginia is quite pretty, but that's about the only thing that can be said for it.

Virginia is much wealthier than West Virginia, and enjoys much higher quality of life, life expectancy, better schools, and higher economic productivity.

Educational tidbits.

I like this pope, certainly relative to others that I'm aware of.

When the depths of applicable precedent have truly been plumbed.

I don't think a foreign ethnoreligious conflict should have a role in American politics.

I don't care what Mamdani thinks of Israel or Palestine. I don't care much about Israel or Palestine, beyond wishing them peace and security.

I don't care about socialist grocery stores.

This is misinfo, but also pretty funny in spite of itself.

First of all, no way this account is American.

Second, the US population reached 100 million at some point between 1915 and 1920, not at whatever time this Gillette commercial was made.

Watched this, "Bullet Train Explosion", a remake of a 1975 film.

It was cheesy and pretty bad.

On the other hand, there's action, there are the landscapes of Japan, and there are trains, so, a few of my favorite elements.

Updated my US map and did Canada and UK ones for sh*ts and gigs.

Looking at the UK one, it's funny that I never wanted to venture south of north Lincolnshire 😂

Making common cause with a far-right movement; being surprised that that movement is full of antisemites.

This is not "180 degrees" from President Trump. This is what President Trump enabled.
