A vital ingredient in life: Have some clear your mind time.

Mine is running. No phone, music, devices. Just me, alone with my thoughts, in nature.

Clear your mind time = Space where your mind can drift and wander freely. It's not drawn to or distracted by technology.

Do Meaningful work

When we feel our work has a purpose, when we can derive meaning from the mundane, we're not only able to persist longer, but also experience greater levels of satisfaction and enjoyment.

As a parent or coach, the hardest moments come when you clearly see someone’s potential, yet they can't. You can’t force motivation—but you can plant seeds.

Here's what to do about it:

t's not about being permissive, or soft...

It's about players or kids knowing that you care about them as a human beings, that you support them, that you fulfill their basic psychological needs.

That creates the security to free us up to take risks, to be tough.

Show up
Work hard
Strive for consistency over perfection
Find joy in the activity itself
Go on the journey with friends
Play the long game, instead of chasing short term results

Do that and you'll end up pretty dang good at whatever it is you are doing.

When Joseph Campbell was asked what it was like to have a peak experience, to feel alive, he said:

"My peak experiences all came in athletics"

Hard things make us feel alive. They force us to be fully engaged, to experience emotions, to navigate discomfort

Motivation should wane.

If you expect to be motivated all the time, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

Ride the wave of motivation. Don't fret if it's not there. It'll come back.

Seeing others behave dishonestly makes you more likely to be dishonest.

Seeing people behave altruistically makes you more likely to be altruistic.

Who you surround yourself with matters. Choose wisely.

You can't rush development.
You can't hack your way to sustainable success.
Stop trying to skip steps.
True development takes time.

Research shows that if coaches are overly critical and have a "negative appraisal" post-game, testosterone levels will drop and it will negatively impacts the next game performance.

Talent doesn't always express itself right away.

Some people's talent is that they are a high responder to training/learning. They need to spend the time doing the work before they can fully express their gift.

We tend to overvalue those who show great initial promise.

As a coach, your role is often get athlete's out of their own head. To free them up to perform the way they've practiced.

Novice runners tend to go too hard on the easy days and too easy on the hard days.

Same thing occurs in the office. We spend too much time, energy & effort on emails, meetings, etc.

We don't block off enough time for the deep work that leads to actual progress & growth.

Connection is vital. But occasionally, we need to spend time alone, with just us and whatever is going on in our head.

Go for a walk without a podcast.
Drive without music.
Get off the internet.
Reflect, ponder, mull things over.
Journal.

Losing hurts because we care. That's the curse of being passionate. It comes with extreme highs and lows. The key lies in being able to move on from the lows. Refocus and get back to what matters, doing the work.

The beauty of track and field is there's no faking it, no hiding behind teammates on rough days. You're exposed, vulnerable. It's you, alone, out on that track.

This sport will humble you, even those who are among the top in the world.
