As a parent or coach, the hardest moments come when you clearly see someone’s potential, yet they can't. You can’t force motivation—but you can plant seeds.

Here's what to do about it:

LeBron is the rare prodigy who has exceeded expectations.

Imagine being anointed as the next great one as a teenager, living under a microscope and then following through on that promise.

Dealing with the pressure and expectations alone would cripple most of us.

Read Books
Deep reading, or full engagement in a book, is an absolute joy. It also forces us to pay attention, to wrestle with ideas, to make sense of complex ideas.

It is the original brain training that works.

Spend Time Alone in Your Head

It can be walking, running, meditating, driving the car without listening to anything, journeling, or anything similar.

But spend time disconnected. Just you alone with your thoughts. Day dream, reflect...get to know your inner world.

Aerobic or Cardiovascular development is simple:
A lot of easy work.
Some work that is just on the right side of under control.
Do that consistently for a really long time.

Toughness isn't about gritting your teeth and blindly grinding your way through. Toughness is a skill that depends on:
1. Understanding Emotions
2. Directing Attention
3. Navigating Your Inner Dialogue
4. Creating space between Stimulus and Response

The athletes who improve most all have: Self Awareness to understand their weakness & the humility to accept and do something about it.

To get better, you have to struggle.

The way your body and mind learn, adapt, and grow is to be slightly embarrassed. That frustration is the signal that our brain/body needs to adjust.

If you want to learn and adapt, embrace the struggle.

Balance in life is BS. To achieve almost anything, there are periods where you have to go all-in and singularly focus on one thing. That's fine. The key is being able to step back when YOU choose to.

There is something about doing something real, that essentially smacks you in the face.

That reminds you that we all give in to fatigue at some point. That we all face doubts & insecurities. That we all want to quit.

Doing something real normalizes instead of idealizes.

We get confidence wrong.

Real confidence lies in understanding who you are & what you are capable of

It lies in being vulnerable, not delusional

Confidence is doing hard things, sometimes failing, but seeing where you lie & then going back to the work

Running helps create two skills that are increasingly rare:

1. When running by yourself, it helps create an ability to be alone inside of your head for a long time.
2. When running with others, you learn to fill time with conversation instead of defaulting to your phone.

90% of coaching is helping people get out of their own way.

Do you want to perform at your best? Get out of your own way. Ego, fear of failure, status anxiety, a focus on the external instead of the internal.

Coaching is not about prescribing and dictating.

It's about creating situations where the athlete is challenged to figure it out. You nudge them along, but if you always give them the answer, you aren't actually teaching. And they aren't learning.
