I would say that's a part of it, but you gotta look at the big picture here. The DNC rolling over for conservatives has been a problem since the 90s but the far-left standing on their "moral high ground" is relatively newer.

@cliffschecter.bsky.social called it the "Reagan Crouch". The DNC has been stuck in it since the 90s, thus their attempts at being "conservative-lite".
They're fighting the last war and getting their milkshakes drank by conservatives.

Look at when the current learership of the DNC came up through the ranks: Reagan.
Much of the leadership of the DNC is still seemingly traumatized by Reagan's '84 victory and have never moved past that trauma, thus the abandonment of FDR/JFK/LBJ ideas and an embrace of "triangulation". 1/2

That's why we should have never stopped calling MAGA "weird".
They're desperate to not only be considered "normal", but they want to be the final arbiters or what really is "normal".
That's why calling them weird really hit them: Being weird is a fatal flaw.
