An old friend died suddenly today. It seems like yesterday Joel Duff and I were on the executive of the Ottawa U Grad Student Association. He was probably the most alive person I ever met. He later went to work for the labour movement, where he made a real difference. Thank you Joel.

Some mornings you wake up, shake your head, and wonder about the future of humanity. This is the man entrusted with the nuclear codes. Then there is the person beside him, which makes me shake my head some more.

Fabulous Concordia History MA student Philippine D'Halleine received a prize for her research photograph related to @deindustrialpol.bsky.social . Her wider project is looking at domestic violence and deindustrialization.

The deadline for the June 2026 @deindustrialpol.bsky.social conference is today and that of our summer institute for emerging scholars is next week. Check out our website for details (deindustrialization.org). Here is one of my favourite DePOT photos taken at our 2022 summer institute in Germany:

This is such a great blog on deindustrialization, offering us a geographic perspective. Highly recommended! I've pasted their map below - as it is an integral part of their analysis.

I was compelled to drop a chapter in my 1999 PhD thesis because it was a mess. Twenty-six years, and much research and thinking, later -- a transformed version will be part of the Gender and Deindustrialization volume edited by Jackie Clarke and Piyusha Chatterjee! @deindustrialpol.bsky.social

An analysis of the Tory platform on higher ed should also include their 'right to work' section where they seek to undermine student unions (as well as trade unions).

One can also see how right wing populism spikes with working-class voters (educational level is a good indicator) in the recent German election.

Today's EKOS rolling poll in Canada looks a lot like the US, Germany, France, etc. Right-wing populism is taking hold among working-class voters. Also a big gender split, with men likewise opting for the Tories.

I spent some time last month at Unifor's HQ delving into their action centre model of worker adjustment. This research was flagged as a priority by Unifor's Angelo DiCaro (pictured here) as part of our @deindustrialpol.bsky.social project.
