I feel similarly about Lois McMaster Bujold's sci-fi character Miles Vorkosigan. Similarly a hyper-competent and hyper-good-guy character, but at least he has a backpack full of hubris and is usually way too clever for his own good, which makes it easier to like him.

My only complaint is that Penric is a bit too good: brilliant sorcerer, master physician, innovative inventor of sorcerous techniques, and really, really, REALLY decent guy. And really good archer, expert climber and I'm sure a kind and generous lover. Dude could serious use a flaw.
