I think I pinned the wrong post.

The video can't handle freckles on the lower half of the face.

People applaud when someone uncovers a Daily Double, which makes no sense- it's going to happen 3 times, it's complete luck.

That JV squad went undefeated (varsity was 6th at the State Championship), mostly because we had 120 kids on the team. That's not how I measured success. I think I was a pretty good coach.

Five years later, I saw two of the kids at a race. They didn't run for college teams, but because they liked it. One of them turned to the other and said "remember the Swamp Stomp?" and they both laughed.

Ten years later, I saw one of those two running with his kid.

They didn't want to stop, but we needed to get back and showered before the last buses. I heard them telling the varsity that they missed out, that we should do this regularly (we didn't; one and done. A couple of parents weren't pleased with muddy socks and skinned knees).

They were miserable and complaining at first as I had them run through an area that was almost impassable on a good day. We were climbing trees, jumping over logs, soon intentionally splashing in puddles like little kids, pushing each other in the mud...

They were laughing, hard. They got into it.

I had the varsity go on a long run past one kid's house, where I knew they'd quit and hang out and they'd think they pulled one over on me.

I told the JV I wouldn't have them do anything I wouldn't, so I was going to join them for something I called "the Swamp Stomp." I made it up as I went.

Anecdote 🧵

When I was coaching high school cross-country running, there was an absolute miserable rainy day and the kids didn't even want to go outside. But if you don't run in bad weather in Minnesota, you don't run very often. The varsity had been working hard and needed a day off, too.

Having had coaches and been one, that's basing greatness on wins, which is dependent on talent. Great coaches cause athletes to love their sport and become more balanced people outside their sport.

Good time to remember that there are no truly great coaches in any sport. Literally none, ever. There are shitty ones and decent ones and pretty good ones, but the good ones only ever look great when they have elite talent, and will look mediocre or even shitty as soon as they don't.

You reminded me of when I was touring grad schools and my host at one introduced herself. I forget the first name, but her last name was Bani Sadr; she immediately said "uncle." I guess she was tired of people asking if her father was Iran's president.

I just checked it too. It could also be Mombasa, but same story: buildings are defined by British type postal codes.

Put in a 3D Blu-ray, got out both kinds of 3D glasses, got a message that it won't play without their proprietary 3D system. Not cool, guys.

Borderlands (2024)

Eli Roth directs this film based on a video game and Jack Black voices a wisecracking robot. This is no one's idea of a good idea.

I've said many times that if reviews start by praising soundtrack and/or cinematography, I'm going to hate it. This is a new variant.

Interesting. Now I'll find myself wondering "has it been 2 months or 3" when I see a sale.
stevequick.bsky.social
What's something you've heard, believe, but have never bothered to check because it's not worth the effort?

Mine: Supermarket coffee goes on sale every 12 weeks.

It's always been pump-driven. It was converted from pumping groundwater to recycling (filtered) lake water.

Up 2 games. I have a good feeling about this. They're sure to win.

Just read a film review where the second word was "mise-en-scene." Well, I read just the first sentence of the review.

Fewer photos than "just's" in that post...
