Just remembering Damon Lindelof's excellent WATCHMEN series, and how impossibly dystopian the idea of masked law enforcement seemed back in 2019.

We really need to fix the charts. Esp at this time of year when it just fills up with all the same old Xmas chestnuts, plus 1 or 2 new songs. What's the point?

Overlooked gem from this year: DEAD OF WINTER - Emma Thompson in Fargo territory (which kinda suits her), and a gripping, moving, atmospheric little thriller. Recommended!

HAMNET is the first film I've seen in ages that moved me to tears. Big emotions but sensual, earthy and understated. Miles apart from standard period drama (the fact it's about Shakespeare is almost incidental). Beautifully made & acted, especially Jessie Buckley, who deserves all the awards going.

Btw - you can see one last Udo Kier cameo in Kleber Mendonça Filho's superb 70s Brazilian story THE SECRET AGENT, coming to UK in Feb 26.

Edgar Wright's THE RUNNING MAN is … OK? Lots of lively action and fun but not all that smart or satisfying beyond broad dystopian vibes. And very blokey - v few female characters of substance, and devolves into guys punching and shooting each other - like it could have been made 38 yrs ago. Oh wait…

So Google have decided to make the app for my Nest thermostat stop working after 10 years and suggest I buy a new one from them. Thanks! Great product!

I went to interview Jane Goodall about some new VR wildlife film initiative in 2018. My fave pic of her:

They say never meet your heroes but Jane Goodall was one of mine and I’m very grateful I did meet her. And was so starstruck I asked for a selfie.

Sadly, SPINAL TAP II rarely turns it up to above 6, let alone 11. Warm nostalgia and indulgent celeb cameos but mostly lacks the mockery and satire - and the tight pacing - of the original. The best jokes are all in the last 5 mins, if you're prepared to sit it out.

Just watched Eddington. More like "needs editing" amirite?

Just watched FANTASTIC FOUR. Or was it a live action remake of The Incredibles? V similar vibe, 50s design, family superpower dynamics but with a bit of old school Marvel instead of Pixar genius. Even a nod to The Underminer!

Everything you wanted to know about 28 Years Later's notoriously well-hung zombie, but Variety weren't afraid to ask.

28 YEARS LATER is uneven and laughable in places, but I found it agreeably bizarre and unpredictable (and some good jump scares). But is it really Brexit the movie? Isolated, insular, paranoid Brits holed up against enemies without. Think of it as the flipside to Boyle's Olympic opening ceremony.

Late to the party I know but ANDOR is just the ticket. Escapist yet revolutionary. Epic and intimate, such a wealth of characters, scales, locations, emotions. I always say it’s a good sign when a series ends and you know, like, 20 characters.

MAJOR SPOILER: The mission does, in fact, turn out to be possible.
May 22, 2025 at 12:11 PM
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: THE FINAL RECKONING is suitably epic and still bar-setting in its action sequences, though the story in between is less engaging — lot of military industrial stuff and earnest, over-cheesy sentiment. About time to draw it to a close. The plane stunts are great though.
