Who’s Next-era ‘Who’, Wire angularity, magisterial descending power chords, Guided By Voices stretch out to 15 songs in 38 minutes. Unbeatable.

About twice a year I’m possessed by the Neil Young habit. It roughly lasts about a week, or as long as it takes to listen to his catalogue, yes even Re-ac-tor and Trans. I love the journey. Now, Sleeps With Angels is casting its contemplative spell

Did Neil Young invent grunge? It’s a fair and unanswerable question. Mirror Ball (95) has just been cleaned up to devastating effect. Subtleties abound in the cacophony. Pearl Jam (minus EV) like they’ve been fed on raw meat.

In a minority, probably, but their finest hour, newly scrubbed up 20 years later in all its technicolour glory

This day, 45 (forty five) years ago.
It blew my little world away, still one of the great, great debuts. Steve Lillywhite worked wonders in capturing the rawness.

Apparently Bowie instructed that only Ken Scott was permitted to remix the four albums he made with him. So,to these ears, the Ziggy Blu-ray Atmos aims to make a notoriously ‘flat’ original into a live experience. It does! How his vocal bounces around the room on “Suicide” is quite incredible

I periodically question myself as to why I overlook Nick Lowe’s body of work. As well as being, it seems, one of the universal good guys he’s capable of songs of shattering introspection. The Beast In Me (covered by his f-i-l) is Jungian analysis for the power pop generation.

Easily one of the best live outfits on the planet, My Morning Jacket’s finest album has got the 20th birthday treatment. John Leckie produced it and this edition grabs by the throat.

The more this incredible album ages, the more it eerily echoes universal themes that, in 2001, appeared to be overly solemn…but now…

My physical copy of this curio sounds like it was recorded down a phone line. 1989, the wilderness years. Released 36 years tomorrow. However, Gangsterville, Island Hopping and Highway One Zero Street are contenders for the most ‘Strummer’ songs ever recorded.

43 years old and unquestionably their high point. This 2016 edition has it all, maybe 11 versions of Promised You A Miracle is pushing it but TOTP on 15/4/82 still seems like yesterday.
