Lucky old Burnham

Really it has to be Burnham, but closer to next election...which is maybe why Streeting might go for it next year some time.

Yeah people just throw centrist round until it just becomes meaningless. Everyone is centrist apart from Zarah Sultana and Tommy Robinson.
December 31, 2025 at 2:57 PM
If Rayner stands I guess she'd win, same with Miliband, but not sure either will, and not sure either would be that popular in the country...but anyone but starmer.

Stopped working in the 70s
December 31, 2025 at 10:14 AM
That is more about higher taxes and bigger welfare state, not a wealth tax
December 31, 2025 at 10:12 AM
We have wealth taxation. Austria doesn't have a specific general wealth, only Spain, Norway and Switzerland do in Europe
December 31, 2025 at 10:11 AM
Yes ok, so what is this other system? Socialism hasn't worked. Neoliberalism hasn't worked. Keynes hasn't worked. Monetarism hasn't worked. We going to try MMT because a few people in YouTube think it sounds groovy?
December 31, 2025 at 10:07 AM
Well, what's the threshold for rich?
December 31, 2025 at 10:04 AM
It really wasn't working that well in the 70s
December 31, 2025 at 10:03 AM
I think most would agree, it is finding something that works is the problem.
December 31, 2025 at 9:37 AM
wealth comes from all sorts of places...inheritance, housing, and people who invest in things. Inheritance taxes are very unpopular. They have a mansion tax. Do we want to stop people investing?
December 31, 2025 at 9:37 AM
Ok, so then people need to focus on his income tax calculations, because the wealth taxes won't touch the sides....and then there's this MMT...is he going to control inflation with taxes, because good luck with that.
December 31, 2025 at 9:35 AM
not the left that I came across on social media...but maybe that is not representative.
December 31, 2025 at 9:30 AM
yes, ok..stick up inheritance tax to 100%. I reckon the public would love that. And stick up capital gains tax to 100%, I reckon that will really help with growth.
December 31, 2025 at 9:28 AM
that's a city
December 31, 2025 at 9:22 AM
he was very unpopular with the left before the election, and obviously also the right...and both extremes make all the noise. It was that doom/gloom and cutting winter fuel payments that really did it though.
December 31, 2025 at 9:22 AM
people spout that wealth taxes are panacea to all our ills...as long as people richer than them pay it.
Just put up income tax.
December 31, 2025 at 9:19 AM
what have they cut? They're sticking up taxes all over the shop...including those wonderful wealth taxes like inheritance and on housing....
Spain's wealth taxes didn't raise as much as expected, Norway doesn't have inheritance tax, Switzerland doesn't have capital gains tax in most cases
December 31, 2025 at 9:18 AM
appealing to majority by blaming everything on some elite, so billionaires for Greens, liberal woke elite for Reform...and just providing simple solutions that sound good but often don't stand up.
December 31, 2025 at 9:11 AM
it isn't socialism, it isn't serious, it is just pure populism.
December 31, 2025 at 7:10 AM
evidence from elsewhere is wealth taxes don't necessarily raise that much and can have negative effects. Polanski has already admitted that wealth taxes won't be enough, and would be primarily to reduce inequality, which is fine. But it is the MMT thing that could be the real fantasy bit.
December 31, 2025 at 7:09 AM
boo hiss...non believer
December 31, 2025 at 7:05 AM
He is so unpopular.
December 30, 2025 at 11:01 PM
Not sure he thinks he's popular, but he wants to be PM and this could be his one and only opportunity.
