I spent some time this afternoon at the Linda Hall Library reading Gessner’s entries for dolphins, porpoises, and orcas looking for connections to Thevet’s accounts of the animals. This research visit was a success. #histsci #skystorians #earlymodern

This week I wrote about Thevet’s claim that wine is necessary for human life and the role of alcohol in culture & ritual. #earlymodern #winehistory #frhistory wednesdayblog.org/2025/09/24/o...

To follow up on this: the book I ordered from France after seeing this news arrived today. The seller shipped it to an importer in Miami who then shipped it onto me with UPS. So, friends, there’s a solution.

Not available until June 2026, but we have a cover! #earlymodern #skystorians

The background image is an eighteenth-century ink and watercolor rendition of the harbor of Le Cap in modern Haiti, with three ships and one small boat foregrounded in the bay and a handful of buildings scattered on the shore in the background.

This week on my blog I drew from the Renaissance humanist proclivity to have everything refer back to antiquity to make a point about finding a work-life balance in grad school. #earlymodern

Yesterday, I went onstage with my friends at the KC Irish Fest where we talked about our Irish classes at the Irish Center of Kansas City. It was a very nice conversation and I hope to see more people in our classes this Fall.

Inné, chuaigh mé ar stáitse le mo chairde ag an Fhéile Éireannach in KC mar áit labhraíomar faoi ár ranganna Gaeilge ar an Chultúrlann Éireannach. Bhí sé an-deas comhrá agus tá mé ag súil ag feiceáil breis daoine inár ranganna san Fómhair seo. #Gaeilge #GaelMeiriceánach

My talk was called "Animals Adapting to Changes in Nature: Perceptions of Animal Intelligence in the Renaissance?” It was a lot of fun to write & rehearse.

The recording of my lightning talk with the @rsaorg.bsky.social in June is now available. I really enjoyed spending the afternoon listening to what my fellow grad students are working on in Renaissance studies. There's a lot of great research going on today. #earlymodern youtu.be/x8n9i4DFxXM?...

My first MA was in International Relations and Democratic Politics (U of Westminster, 2016) and one of my favorite parts of the course was learning how to read EU public policy documents & write policy briefs. Isolationism is bad for everyone, especially in as global a profession as academia.

There was one book I’ve been looking at for a while now that I finally did order from a French bookseller in spite of the shipping fees being 100% of the book’s list price. I just hope it gets shipped before this service suspension takes effect in France. Might’ve waited too long on this one.

Hi @malthusjohn.bsky.social, not necessarily. This essay is more about the underlying structures & cultural connotations of knowledge like the order of the alphabet and how those structures provide the language for broader cosmovisions, especially in the development of taxonomy.

My first peer-reviewed article is out! “A Sloth in the First French Colony in the Americas” is a good summary of my research on André Thevet’s observations of a 3 toed sloth which are one of the key singularities in his “Singularitez”. doi.org/10.1080/0082... #earlymodern #histsci #hps
