This was basically the libertarian pitch, something for the liberals, something for the conservatives, hopefully they'll just have interesting conversations and stay in balance. In practice the people who were in it mainly for the freedom to be racist yelled loudest and drove everyone else out.

They could ram things through, but baiting Ds into negotiating allows them to stain Ds with the smell of their shit while also claiming a "win" over the Ds. You can only brag you beat someone in arm wrestling if they actually agree to sit down and arm wrestle.

Ugh, this whole thing is a variation on "pray I don't alter the deal further". Voting on ACA subsidies was *already* negotiated to reopen the gov't (without these new strings attached, and knowing it would die in the house). I don't know why anyone takes anything Republicans say in good faith.

"It's not in fact so very surprising that you don't meet many people whose grandfathers took the bridge at Arnhem... We are all descendents of the lucky or the cowardly"

I've gotten really sick of people in think-tanks thinking they are so above it all. We're knee deep in the shit, some people finally took a stand and *that* is his critique of the situation? Out of touch much?

Hilarious to see Nazis and enablers of the current regime of liars, scammers and lawbreakers falling back on "but propriety!" or "these people are of poor character" as a criticism.

Just listened to all 3 versions twice. IMO Jimmy Webb's is the best; the orchestral arrangement and playing of Webb's is knock-it-out-of-the-park outstanding. Campbell's is pretty good too; the Highwaymen version is kinda bland by comparison to both.

I agree with this. My intro to this song was being 16 in the car with my parents. Not long into the song it was obvious what it was about, and it was obvious enough to my parents that naturally I got a lecture about how belief in re-incarnation was unChristian...

I read it back in the day, but it's style of a pox-on-both-parties both-sides-erism just made them look stupid after the MAGA takeover of the Republican party. When one party was clearly hell-bent on destroying the very concept of rule of law, they just looked stupid and naive.

And their own little free-speech experiment in their comment section proved their own position wrong- good speech doesn't drive out bad, without conscious effort it's the other way 'round. Like every other un-moderated internet comment venue, it eventually became a cesspool of loudmouth trolls.

Thank you for writing a take that doesn't put how she is the vote that will release the Epstein files at the forefront. The Epstein files vote will be a nice bonus and all, but it's not the most important thing about this situation.
