Reckless driving is killing us. St. Louis deserves more than paint and photo ops. 1/9

After we wrap up a busy day of classes, retail & more, we're headed to the Shrewsbury Fall Festival this afternoon and evening! We're pulling out all the stops for the little riders out there as we deploy our balance-bike course on this beautiful day. Join us! www.shrewsburymo.gov/news_detail_...

St. Louis cannot afford to treat traffic violence as a branding exercise. Lives depend on action, not appearances. 9/9

Instead, we are given cosmetic improvements to very specific vocal neighborhoods, producing favorable photographs and social media posts.

On the ground, conditions are not improving. They are deteriorating. 8/9

• We expect dangerous driving to be addressed with traffic enforcement, especially in residential neighborhoods, near parks, and around schools. 7/9

• We expect advocates to support victims and families in becoming whole again, not to use their stories merely as justification for new projects. 6/9

Since no one else is saying it,

• We expect a community where no driver leaves a child—or any person—in the street after a crash, regardless of who is at fault. 5/9

Yet from politicians and organizations that rarely miss a ribbon-cutting, there has been no public outrage, no accountability, and no serious response. Only silence. 4/9

Just this week—during what was promoted as “car-free week”—at least four people walking or biking were struck by drivers, including a child stepping off a school bus. 3/9

Reckless driving continues to claim lives in our city, and St. Louisans deserve more than symbolic gestures in response. Green paint, staged photo opportunities, and curated social media campaigns do not make our streets safe. 2/9

We could start by tossing out advocacy that only allows for built environment upgrades? Be open to discussing regional advocacy instead of hyper local? Share when we have crashes and not be afraid of letting people know about them?

And we are at 4 hit and run crashes on pedestrians this week.

It's a beautiful day to celebrate our seven newest independent bicycle riders, #STL! After the downpour this afternoon, the skies calmed down just in time for this dedicated crew's final week of Learn-To-Ride class. Big thanks to teachers Cate and Chad and to all seven brand-new BWorks grads! 🚲🌧️🤩
Some very proud-looking kiddos pause with their practice bikes as their dedicated BWorks teachers smile in the background after leading the group of seven Learn-To-Ride students through their pre-practice-ride safety checks.

★ Arriving to work this morning to surprise coffee and donuts from dedicated volunteers
★ Decorating helmets at Patrick Henry elementary school
★ Realizing a puzzle bike got put *nearly* back together correctly by a team of Humboldt students (can you spot the single mixup on the pink bike? :-)) 2/3
Six freshly adorned helmets sit on the desks of the Earn-A-Bike students currently taking bike class as part of their school day at SLPS's Patrick Henry Downtown Academy A pink "puzzle bike" is in need of just a touch of TLC after students from SLPS's Humboldt Academy in Soulard accidently put one of the pedals on the under-bike side of a crank arm :) Appropriately, the frame of the puzzle bike has a sticker on it that happens to say "LOL"

A few moments of joy this week in no particular order (and not all pictured)…
★ Gathering with 36 BWorks riders of all ages for our Balloon Glow adventure
★ Sharing dream-bike drawings at City Garden on Day 2 of Earn-A-Bike 1/X
Some of the 36 BWorks riders who joined us on bikes for the Balloon Glow alumni adventure last week pause for a picture at Turtle Park just prior to rolling out to the event in Forest Park. Colorful balloons light up the sky at Emerson Central Fields last night while BWorks families enjoy the event before biking back together. Volunteer BWorks teacher Pat leads dream-bike show-and-tell with one of our City Garden fourth-grade cohorts

Each year BWorks donates overflow mountain bicycles that we dont have the manpower to be able to refurbish, to various charities around the world. These bicycles find new life by helping provide much needed transportation options.
