Deepfakes are scarier because lifelike video and audio of real people can easily fool our senses, enable targeted scams and political lies, and erode trust in all recordings in ways still images usually cannot.

Australia chose a different lever (no accounts under 16, plus systemic safety codes) rather than KOSA‑style “duty of care” tied to content harms, but it did not solve the deeper tension between protection and access to affirming content. Meta platforms are not a safe for LGBTQ youth to be on.

I agree, KOSA was pitched as a bipartisan child‑safety and privacy bill aimed at curbing addictive design, dangerous content, and data abuses by large platforms, not as an effort to hurt kids or explicitly target LGBTQ or trans communities but could have stigmatized content with how it was written.
