Walnut J-style bass
September 27, 2025 at 5:28 PM
Fender recently sent me a cease and desist email so I have to speak in code now when I refer to body shapes that have been borrowed from them. So here is a ‘J-style’ bass body in the works made of walnut. This model was originally marketed to JAZZ musicians who play BASS.

This was built for a friend back in 2018. I added an exaggerated round over in the arm scarf area to make it more comfy to play.

I still make Lakin Basses upon request even though the man himself is retired. They are vintage inspired Fender style instruments that are taken up a notch in terms of playability, sound and performance. This is a short scale Tele Bass with a slightly scaled down body and a Novak Bisonic pickup.

The first step in making the fret ends more friendly is knocking off the sharp corners.

A couple of walnut pickguards

P bass with modified cutaway and poured resin pickguard made from a beam that came out of an historic Canadian recording studio known as LeStudio. Maple neck, rosewood fingerboard. Vibey AF!

These were made almost exactly 7 years ago and recently came in for a refresh. The lightning bolt on the pickguard was a request from the original owner. It was the logo for a business that he was starting.

The tele is cypress and the Jazzmaster is reclaimed fir and pine. Pickguards are Masonite

Springtime on Giddings St.

We seem to get a “fluffle” of bunnies every year. This one was a couple of feet from the nest so I carefully put it back. (Google said I should). In the past I’ve made a cage to protect the nest from our dog, Cookie, but it seems like she’s learned to leave it alone

This partsmaster has been kicking around my shop for the last couple of years. I finally found some time to finish it up. I made the neck and used it as a chance to experiment with resin block inlays. The lipstick pickup actually blends really well with the JM pickups.

New pickguard day for a reclaimed jazzmaster made in 2022. This one is unfinished birch. I like the simplicity against the texture and color of the reclaimed body wood.

Here’s another contribution to my life goal of filling the world with beautiful objects. This one is in the form of an offset tele.
