Terry Pratchett said it best in his Sam Vimes theory of boots and the cost of poverty. In my 20s I had a very expensive pair of boots. But I wore them all the time and they lasted for years and years, including getting them resoled.

Summer outdoor practice was easier as the local town had a nice cafe. A coffee/pastry and newspaper could last a long time. And that’s not even talking about 7-8am starts for rugby in the winter. I must have looked like I was dragged through a hedge backwards.

The shooting club had a pub, since most going to it were adult men. I couldn’t have a drink and really it wasn’t a comfortable place to be. So I sat in the car, engine running (I know 🙄), light on and read a book. For 2 hours.

Encouraging our kids’ enthusiasms is admirable. I can’t tell you the number of hours I spent taking my son to his shooting club and just…sitting in my car until he was done (club wasn’t really set up for parents to just wait). Lots of fun in the winter.

No surprise. Trump hates anyone who isn’t white. We’ve known that since …the 1960s.

Clearly, the only diseases worth investigating are those affecting white men. Obviously. 🙄

Many years ago (1973) at my boarding school we had a semester on plays. We read: JB, Under Milkwood, Our Town, Genet’s The Balcony, The Glass Menagerie and we had to write a term paper and shorter papers on each play. I wrote my term paper on Japanese Kabuki and Noh theatre.

One of the many problems with this approach (even if you accept the premise you should be looking at future jobs 🙄) is that you can’t know what will be useful 10/15/20 yrs. That’s when this cohort will come into their own. So it’s an own goal, aside from being appalling.

Was in hospital for a hip replacement. Have a bruise on my hand where the cannula went in. Very like the one in Trump’s hand.

An example is means testing benefits. Yea, it saves money, yes it stops ‘rich’ people from benefiting. It also fuels resentment from the people paying most tax (the rich) because they no longer get back as much from their taxes. So it reduces social cohesion & isn’t really a good idea.

Had a boss that kept us on our toes. Could go through us for a shortcut but if we did something wrong and anyone outside said something, he took the blame. Only he got to yell at us, no one else was allowed. We hated letting him down because he had our backs.

When Cromwell approved of killing Irish Catholic children & there was pushback he said: ‘Nits make lice’. Horrible then, horrible now.
