We all know that squashing a rock makes it stiffer, but did you know water makes it softer?

We wondered what happens underground, where rock is both squashed AND wet?

TLDR: moisture dominates sandstone to >400m depth, and granite to >1000m depth!

Comparison with a post-event image highlights areas that might have been avoided with the aid of maps derived from most basic data. Thanks to @subfossilguy.bsky.social for the post-event image.

The disastrous impacts of debris flows at Dharali village in Uttarakhand this week are an important reminder of the need for good risk communication.

Maps that clearly communicate relative risk levels can save lives, by flagging areas that are marginal for development - before an event occurs.

Feeling pretty futuristic sitting on the rocks watching a stream of #SpaceX catch a big f'n rocket booster, as #SailGP yachts are trying to launch themselves around the bottom mark.

Here's what Cararra Marble looked like before Michaelangelo spoiled it for automatic content detection algorithms

Michelangelo's David was carved from extremely pure Carrara Marble. It's purity results from marine deposition in a low-energy environment rich in marine life, far from river outlets. It's purity also helps connect climate change to landsliding:

'Exfoliation' fractures form as thinning glaciers allow tectonic stresses to 'pop' bedrock slabs. River erosion is now forming a fluvial landscape.

Initially carved by glaciers perhaps 700,000 years ago, bedrock uplift and river incision has transformed this old U-shaped valley into a deep V-shaped valley.

This is Kaikōura, NZ. From the top of Mt Fyffe, to the bottom of the offshore Kaikoura Canyon, there is almost 4,500 m of elevation change in just 50 km. A biodiversity hotspot, and breathtakingly beautiful on a spring morning. #FotoVorschlag
