Also, is this new? In UK/Ireland all the Christian Churches have long been full of clergy who say awful things. In Christian theology you have the importance of individual conscience. This means clergy generally have the freedom to express their own views even if they are at odds with their Churches

The religious texts and scriptures that Christianity are build upon are very debateable. I would say it is unchristian to consider empathy a sin. But I think that might be my interpretation of Christian teachings, not a fact I can assert as the only truth as people have debated Christianity forever

It works both way too, you have clergy who go against the general teachings of their Church to do things considered unacceptable that you might feel are Christian, like, when I was a kid, I remember Ken Leech and his famous at that time support of prostitutes in Soho en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth...
