Orthography really gets in the way of learning to pronounce English if you start with literacy in a language that has a 1-1 correspondence between letters and sounds. I am so sorry. (Also I am fascinated because this is a special interest for me inside of my special interest of language acquisition)

I read it on a cross-country Greyhound bus maybe 25 years ago and I loved it so much - have always been meaning to give it another go in a more normal context but also sort of not wanting to tarnish that experience

It's often described as "long o" as in Joan and the name of the letter o, and "short o" like John, hot, pot, etc. This is northeast American pronunciation. In NY you might also hear John with the aw vowel, like yawn or awe.

I remember learning that too: that we take care of each other, that people on the margins create their own systems, that great love flows in times of great suffering. I was too young to lose anyone I knew at the time, but I feel the lack of elders now. Realizing that my kid is the age I was in 1988.

Of course it's not true that no one cared, you cared, so many people who inspired me cared, so much, but that was the message - either "they deserve it" or "so what" and all it was to be gay was to suffer discrimination and violence or to suffer pain and death.
