Pandas are one thing but don’t be fooled into thinking a thaw in the current situation is anything other than a tacit admission by China that they moved too aggressively too early. Deng Xiaoping said China should “Hide our capacities and bide our time”. Xi simply jumped the gun… don’t forget this.

It would be better if the NYT held Trump to the same level of coverage. Not treating someone who is an inarguable threat to our democracy in the same manner is wrong.
