Me: Are you sure that staircase is right?

4yo: Yep, I’m making the picture in the book.

I used this yesterday with Y7. The number line helped them get their heads around the idea that there is one more "jump" than blanks to fill.

In #MathsToday with Y10 we did this set of questions.

I let them choose their preferred method for each question. My model solutions were a ratio table with 100% in the top-left for consistency.

Not sure what’s going on with the little ones though?

Every time I visit my mum I’m always reminded of these mathematical placemats.

A great total to have if you want to split a bill evenly in a restaurant.

A silly bit of interweaving or a useful task?

A brain dump of mathematical misconceptions.

Which of these might be avoided through careful teaching?

Arbitrary and necessary mathematics.

One of those most important ideas to consider when planning and delivering maths lessons.

Here's my one-slide summary based on Dave Hewitt's article here:

I used this task this week to introduce Y10 to simultaneous equations.

Drawing attention to important decisions that need to be made.

In #MathsToday I did this as a starter on estimation.

With the aim of getting pupils to consider which counters are the 'significant' ones.

After they got good at decomposing numbers, I used this to introduce the idea of finding LCMs efficiently.

In #MathsTomorrow I'm going to try and develop a sense of why we round numbers.

Any good ones to add to my list?

In #MathsToday I gave my 7yo the calculation in the box at the top.

This was his method.

In #MathsToday I set my Y9 this little "bonus homework" after introducing prime factors. Wonder if they will spot the link?

@bennewmark.bsky.social recognise this run?
