Relevant again, 38 years on: In Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), a teacher explains the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act. This law raised tariffs (taxes on imports) to try and fix the Great Depression, but ultimately failed and backfired, worsening the economy and pushing the U.S. deeper into hardship.
