I don't know what I think of degrowth, but I'd see it more as anti-commodification of energy (and other stuff). Decentralised energy systems, sufficiency, doughnut economics and all that. It seems to be more about redefining what's essential and what metrics matter, than being "anti-energy"

You're probably right, I only wanted to say that a nascent movement is always going to resemble a echo chamber, it's not a reason to dismiss it

And I believe my analogy still holds, because while the climate movement is saying "stop using fossil fuels*", states notably are not stopping

What's interesting about this movement is that it also includes a lot of data scientists, software engineers, AI researchers and ex-tech workers. Of course lots of people use AI now, but I think we are seeing the birth of a movement to resist and control tech at the same time

I'm not trying to dunk on you @davidcrespo.bsky.social I'm just making the point that all movements start small. Anti-AI sentiment is strong among artists, anti-capitalists, digital rights advocates and environmentalists. We are seeing a movement emerge from those parts, and it has potential

Then get everyone to ask a search engine the same question. The search engines will get the answer consistently right

AI knows nothing. It bullshits its way through everything. It's as reliable as any dumb poser with a big vocabulary. This is a feature not a bug

Cherry picking a single correct answer tells people nothing

Try this instead: get a large group of people together. Get everyone to ask their LLM of choice an obscure multiple choice question

Sit back and watch the models confidently spew out completely different answers to different users

VIRGIN AI LOVER: you've got to embrace new technology

LUDDITE CHAD: the devastating capabilities of anthropogenic forces confront us with an urgent need to rethink the socially and ecologically destructive potentials of "progress"

"tree-based feature transformation" sounds like marketing copy for argan oil skin cream and/or a landscaping company that's into SEO

...“The company has been shutting down ways for people to talk openly and critically about AI, which is dangerous, and that’s why this letter is important. Amazon used to be a genuinely innovative place, but leadership’s AI push has meant arbitrary quotas and benchmarks that make worse products.”

The letter has 3 demands:

1. No AI with dirty energy;
2. No AI without employee input;
3. No AI for violence, surveillance, or mass deportation.

“The letter asks for the kind of future I want to work on, and that Amazon claims to value,” says an anonymous senior software engineer.

They continue..

"We can’t rely on our management chain for sound or data-driven decisions anymore. They’re making us use AI even when it doesn’t make sense...When the AI bubble pops, Amazon will have taken over a huge amount of land, water, and wealth...the public needs to know."
