“Career paths shouldn’t be guesswork”

If your company still waits for promotions to develop people, you're already behind.

Today’s smartest companies do 3 things:

- Build skills before roles exist
- Support internal mobility with real programs

Your A-players are burning out…
because you let your C and D-players coast.

You know it.
They know it.
And worst of all? Your culture reflects it.

Read about the Monday I didn't want to go to work (at my own company).

Evidence-based business.
Following the 4+2 formula leads to business success.
90% of top companies do this.

It’s not luck.
It’s not timing.
It’s not some genius breakthrough.

It’s the same 4+2 principles, repeated with discipline:

4 CORE PRACTICES:
- Clear strategy

“Honesty is optional in leadership.”
Sound familiar?

But contrary to some of the evidence in front of us, 88% of people say honesty is the #1 trait they want in a leader.

Not vision.
Not charisma.
Honesty.

So why are there so many leaders lying or hiding the truth?

The @governor.ca.gov @gavinnewsom.bsky.social vetoed a bill that would remove the crazy pre-approval processes for PT. He decided to side with United Health and Anthem over Californians.

Doing the work isn’t enough.
You need to know which kind you're doing.

There are 3 types of work:

• Technical: doing the thing
• Managerial: making sure it gets done
• Entrepreneurial: deciding what gets done

Most business owners get stuck in the first one.
You're good at it.

Most strategies fail AFTER they’ve been approved.

Why?

Because teams aren’t aligned.

You can have the most brilliant plan on paper—
If your people don’t buy in, it goes nowhere.

Strategy only works with alignment.

Here’s what that means:
- Everyone knows the mission

Why do so many fake leaders still rise?

88% of people say honesty is the #1 trait they want in a leader.

Not vision.
Not intelligence.
Not charisma.

Honesty.

But too many leaders treat truth like a tactic, used only when it helps them win.

That’s not leadership. That’s manipulation.

- Match people to new opportunities.
- Offer short, useful courses to build business skills.

These companies don’t just hire talent. They grow it.

And they outperform everyone else on profitability, innovation, and retention.

Most companies say “people are our greatest asset.”

But only 36% back it up with any real investment.

The others lose talent... fast.

Here’s what the top companies do differently:

- Invest in leadership training.
- Promote internal mobility.
- Offer mentorship and personal coaching.

Most business advice is noise.

But this 4+2 formula worked for 90% of top companies over 10 years.

Master these 4: strategy, execution, culture, structure.

Then pick 2: talent, leadership, innovation, or partnerships.

Simple combo. Proven results.

88% of people say honesty is the #1 trait they want in a leader.

But many leaders still lie.

Why?

Because popularity gets rewarded faster than integrity.

Lead with truth anyway. People remember who they can trust.

A thing I hear from PT Practice Owners is that they have trouble understanding how their daily operations impact their financial outcomes. Connecting the dots, in other words.

They were trained to treat patients, not taught how to read a P&L or connect visit numbers to revenue.

Most mission statements no one remembers.

Great companies set Big Hairy Audacious Goals.

Like “put a man on the moon (and bring him back) before the end of the decade.”

It’s short, bold, and clear.

Does your team have a real goal? Or just a paragraph?

And don't forget the bring him back part.

Yet most leaders still hide the truth.

That’s not leadership.

That’s fear.

If you want trust, start telling the truth every time.

Not sure how many PT Practice Owners, or small business owners in general are on BlueSky here.

But I love this feedback! And Dave isn't even a client (yet 😁).
