viktor finding every opportunity he can to princess carry his man
“I’m fine,” Jayce manages, humiliatingly breathy, and he makes a startled noise when the Machine Herald strides even closer, when he encircles those huge, gauntleted hands around his waist. He looks down, feeling his toes curl when he sees how the Machine Herald’s hands wrap easily around him, metal fingers touching together. “Um,” he squeaks, finally looking up at him with huge eyes. “I can probably get home fine now that you’ve chased them off.” The Herald just hums dismissively, lifting Jayce easily into his arms. Jayce’s breath hitches at the ease in the way he moves Jayce’s body, Jayce unable to break free even if he wanted to.

He feels like a deer, a pack of wolves circling him and ready to jump for the kill if he shows so much as a hint of weakness. Jayce might be able to look the part, but he has never felt like a fellow wolf, comfortable in the hunt. He has always felt more like a soft-bellied herbivore, preferring to graze in peace. But predators like these forget the strength of a prey animal. A stag can kill a wolf with a well-aimed kick to the head.

Heimerdinger seems taken aback, and maybe Jayce came on a little too strong but he doesn’t care anymore. He’s sick of how slow bureaucracy is, wishes he could just sweep his hand over the issues and wipe them away. He wishes Heimerdinger wasn’t stuck in his fear of magic and mages, of anything unknown, wasn’t so concerned with maintaining the status quo that he started two hundred years ago.

Cruelty does not become Viktor and never has— except in these situations. He thinks his partner has picked on the fact that Jayce enjoys seeing him opening up enough to be a tiny bit cruel. It’s not like Jayce thought that Viktor was incapable of this quality, but he took pains never to show it, and never to resort to it, be it out of kindness or civility. So he is now thrilled to be allowed to bear witness to it. It speaks to a kind of trust that they didn’t have before.

It feels like they’re dancing around each other. Which is unfortunate, because it’s been proven that they do not have the coordination, the balance, or the dignity, for their dance to look like anything but a flailing of limbs. Whatever they are together has always felt more like inevitable momentum— head-first, logic-second, gravity itself setting the tempo. Jayce now feels like an overcharged exoskeleton after a surge of power, crumpled in a heap of metal at Viktor’s feet, disassembled and open to the wiring. Viktor can put him back together, can he not? There’s no one else in the world he’d trust as much. He wants to put all his pieces in Viktor’s hands, and reassemble himself in whatever way he needs.
