Me placing a wreath on MSG Gregory Robert Spencer's headstone at Arlington National Cemetery. Did I know him? No. I spoke his name and others for those who couldn't be there, just as I have done for the past 5 years. Knowing it means so much to my friends, my husband and I make sure we also honor their family members interred at Arlington when they can't make the ceremony themselves. This photo was at the Wreaths Across America 2024 ceremony. A bag of artificial flowers that I picked up from my campsite at Spring Gap Campground. They were strewn across the campground. Me at mile marker 74 on the C&O Canal Towpath, along with a bag of trash I'd picked up over the 4+ miles from Antietam Creek Campground. Most of the trash was dog poop bags people had left along the towpath. I mean, I guess I'm glad they scooped the poop, but they need to #PackItOut if they are really going to #LeaveNoTrace.

A bag full of trash (mostly plastic flowers) that was picked up around my campground at the start of my 2019 Subaru Day of Caring journey along the C&O Canal Towpath (this was at Spring Gap Campground). My Crosstrek is in the background. My bike and most of my gear from the 2019 Subaru Day of Caring, where I rode from Spring Gap to Fifteenmile Creek campground, picking up trash along the way. Most of the trash I picked up was microplastics and cigarette butts, so it didn't take up much space (thankfully). A black bag full of nasty trash I picked up between Antietam Creek Campground and MM71 on the C&O Canal Towpath during the 2021 Subaru Day of Caring. Most of the trash here was dog poop bags, which made me pretty angry. You bag the trash, but refuse to take it with you? Me with the even-larger bag of trash at MM74 along the C&O Canal Towpath. In the 2 miles between 72 and 74, almost all the trash I picked up was either plastic water bottles or bags of dog poop.

My husband dropped me off in my 2023 WRX. He loves to make weird faces at the camera. I was wearing Subaru Ambassador gear under all this, I swear! Forest Glen Trail connects the Grist Mill Trail to the Hilton Area. I hadn't gone up this way before. This was where the trail I was on (a branch of the Santee Branch Trail) reconnected with the Grist Mill Trail. This was not a well marked trail.

The main things I find along the C&O Canal Towpath when I do trail cleanups are 1) dog poop bags, 2) cigarette butts and 3) microtrash. Our society is too focused on one-use and conveniency, without thinking about the environmental consequences.

I used the recipe in Subaru Drive to make some sugar scrub in various scents. My sister-in-law was especially delighted! One note I will share: not all essential oils are considered skin-safe, so be sure to look at the label before buying.

I took a step backwards when I sold my modified 2006 WRX and "replaced" it with a 2023 WRX. The new one is a "better" car in stock trim, but there was something about driving that raw, unrefined competition car on the street as a daily and for road trips.
